October 13th 2008

During the afternoon today, I felt more prepared as an instructor. I took attendence and handed the kids their binder in both labs to attempt to learn their names. While the students were working on their projects, I went around to see what the students were doing. Pa Ying and Kiki's group had a good start on their song idea, and with all of our brain power they were able to get it into a basic ababcb format. After, they had trouble with finding a beat and wanted to copy one from a song. I told them that they could recreate that piece and suggested slow songs sung by female artists. Jesus's group was on a good start as well. They kept getting fixated on the idea to download wire, but I tried to point them to the path to using what they had. The only student that didn't really have a secure idea of his project was Dhondup. He just didn't have a clear vision of what his final project would be.

When I taught, the most frustrating part was the energy level of the kids. It was good that they had so much enthusiam, it was just hard to find a balance between being really severe and relaxed. It did make me happy that a lot of the students were ccontributing to the discussion. Also, it was good that the students figured out that they wouldn't get their break until everyone contributed. So it gave more imput. I felt good about teaching and that things were not awkward. It wasn't a very nerve racking experience.

The last portion of the afternoon went really productive. Pa Ying's group got really far with their song. The only trouble they have is matching their beat to the actual lyrics and how to sing it. My biggest accomplishment of the day, that I thought, was helping William's group redo their entire lyrics. From using artists relevant to them and taking the idea of “hating chemistry” one step further, the boys continued to be intrigured with thier project now about the value of education.
