9/11/10 Slide Me To Vietnam Day 1

Today was the first day of the three part series, slide me to Vietnam. As soon as the students came to class, they took a survey on qualtrics. The questions consisted of:
* Where was the last road trip?
* What country is next to Vietnam?
* What does the word landfill community mean?
* Have any of you ever used iMovie?
For the first question, most of the students interpreted it as an actual road trip with driving. So, the answers did not turn out as intended, but most of the students had driven to the Dells, Devils Lake, and Chicago. The next question was interesting to see the response. Some of the students googled Vietnam and saw that it was next to Laos and Cambodia. No one mentioned that it was next to China and Illa even mentioned it was next to France. The third question was not discussed until later during the PowerPoint. And, all of the students had not used iMovie.

Marc than presented about himself. Surprisingly, all of the students did not remember him or his name. But they enjoyed hearing about his past ITA life, his work experiences, and his extra curricular activities. Marc's energy made it easy for the students to stay engaged.

Ann started off the presentation with a video created by the Catalyst Foundation, the non-profit organization the Vietnam Health Project collaborated with. Ann was going to stop the movie half way, but they were very intrigued and wanted to finish the last two minutes. The movie really shocked the kids because of how the families actually lived. They were surprised that in the movie, the little girl only made fifty cents a day.

After, Ann began to show pictures of her trip and a short clip made in iMovie about VHP. The students were surprised at the videos of the landfill communities. They were extremely grossed out with the flies everywhere in one of the landfill member's home. They were also shocked about the age of the boys in the following picture. The littlest one is 13 and the other ones are between 16-17 years old. She then showed the students pictures of the activities the organization did with the students and some videos. Ann had the students learn Vietnamese words of the basic human body parts and had the students try the same sensory activity. The students saturated their eyes with one color for 30 seconds and then looked at a white sheet of paper and saw a different color.

The entire presentation about Vietnam took almost an hour. During the entire lecture, the students were engaged, always asking questions. Erica intervened multiple times about the Vietnamese life style. At 2:28 the students had a break and then they were given their part number. Ann had the students upload their favorite picture from their section and write about the most shocking fact they learned. Surprisingly, 1/2 of the students found this project extremely meaningful and wanted to purse a trip like this in the future.
