Today in session, we did a peer review of the seniors proposals. Elizabeth did an excellent job providing students one on one attention. Seniors get distracted easily and don't follow directions. Instructors need to be flexible and fun while still stern. This is a very hard task to accomplish. What Elizabeth did to motivate the students was a trade off. In particular, she worked with Jesus who needed to start on his timeline of his proposal. She told Jesus that she would look over his college essay if he finished his proposal and he did. Unlike the freshman, where it is okay to be strict to earn their respect, seniors need a personal connection.
AJ worked with Tenzin on his proposal. Tenzin, a very talented student, has motivational problems with stuff he is uninterested in. AJ also gave Tenzin one on one attention with his project. He pushed Tenzin to try the harder project compared to what I had advised Tenzin to do, which was the easier project. I think in this case, AJ is right to force Tenzin to try something hard. Tenzin needs to realize his potential and challenge himself. This illustrated a quality of a good mentor who can guide and motivates students.
Walking into Felipe's room, I breifly saw how him and Eliza interacted with the students. To me, their room seems more stressful. This may due to the quantitiy of students. But my advice to both teachers when working with the students to be a little more relaxed. I'm not sure yet how the teachers should approach motivating the students, but being super strict is not working.
