1/3/09 Session One of Flash

AJ taught the flash lesson in a way that was different than I had planned but I thought it worked out better. For next year, after we show the students a little about Flash we should let them play around. Pari, already knew a little bit about Flash so it was interesting to see him try to make a ball bounce right after seeing AJ do it. Other students realy didn't know what to draw so it was hard for them. I think when we open up flash we should challenge them with very simple stuff they could draw with shape tool options and pencil tool.

Another thing that AJ did that I liked was how he introduce the ball animation as a movie clip right away. This was instead of having the ball bouncing animation on the main stage and then making a new movie clip and then copy and paste the frames. With AJ's approach, we edited the bouncing ball in the movie clip timeline. Something that we need to make sure that the students understand is that there is a main time line and then movie clip timelines. I'm not sure if the students complelety understood what was going on when we added a motion tween of the bouncing ball movieclip. That is something we'll need to go over.

Also, when AJ taught how to make the ball bounce realistically he brought in Physics. We should gear drawing towards how objects are in space. Next year we should change the motion tweens to be across the screen, the ball moving towards you, the ball moving away from you, and various other angles. Therefore they will hopefully understand different perspective. Adding the puff of clouds was a good idea too. Adding sound to the ball went well too. AJ told the students how light travels faster then sound, therefore the sound of the ball bouncing needed to come a litte after the ball hit the ground. However, we still need to emphasize that sound needs to be added on a different layer. You need to add a keyframe and then put the sound on the stage. We should also review how to movie a sound.

First hour went well. The students didn't get the commercial that Quentin and Isaac made. I think a good way to end the flash unit would be to show it again and see if the students get the jokes. We didn't show a lot of the animations that were on the PowerPoint but the animator versus animation was a good one to start with. The brainstorm about what is Flash is a struggle. The students just weren't excited right away. I think we just need to show examples of Flash but not tell it to them and see if they realize it.

BTW introduction could've been better. I think we need an example the first day to show the students what we expect with the pre-loader, menu with two buttons and two movie clips. I think that we need to show them an example soon.

During the challenge session, I looked at the studenst projects. Out of the twelve students that were half of the students took the challenge session as an opportunity to really draw and try new stuff. Some even tried to do backgrounds.

What we should emphasize next session: drawing, making sure sound and background are on different layers, properly naming stuff, maybe introduction to folders.
