3/7/09 Flash

The goal of today in Flash was to teach students buttons and have them take the permit tests. The Simpson activity to teach buttons was alright. Next year, we should simplify the lesson plant. Instead of having the students animate the button by moving the text, they should either do a text color change or button color change. This was a major problem for our class because students continuously got tween errors such as "Tween 1." Also, our class really did not go over labeling. I think that should be the focus of the lesson, how to make your button actually work. We briefly went over the code, but the students weren't exposed to the logic of the ActionScript code. But overall the students know what buttons are just not necessarily how to make them work.

The permit review I thought went well. The challenge of having Garfield complete the maze really made the students think. They didn't have their binders with them but if they did, their success would probably increase. The majority of the students tried to a motion guide but a lot of them forgot how to complete the tasks. After ten minutes, I verbally told the students how to do a motion guide and had them reiterate the steps. Next year, I think the instructors should show multiple ways to compete the challenge with motion guides and motion tweens.

The results of the permit test were ridiculously good. Everyone in my class passed except for one students. My class average was a 77. However, I really don't know how well the students know Flash Animation. I think they understand the concept, they just haven't had the opportunity to use it. Next session should just be a work session.
